So that’s one that certainly need to be careful about. For pet goats, like pygmies are often kept, be very careful about things that we might pick and give to the goat because they do kind of trust people. So if you go and trim Azalea bushes and throw that over in the field where the goats are, they’re going to eat readily. There are a lot of ornamental plants and just as a general ornamental plant, things that we plant around the house, usually have some level of toxicity. If you cut them and put them in the pasture then they are much more likely to eat those than if the plant had just been standing out in the pasture and they’ve had some previous experience with it.

Tammy: That’s interesting because I talked to a vet that had a whole herd that died because somebody had chopped up an ornamental plant and gave it, but her…Somebody told me that they didn’t know the difference, but it makes sense if you fed them that they’d do that.

Dr. Olcott: Yeah they need a little opportunity to kind of get used to plants in the area, so the story we’ll hear sometimes is goats brought from a different part of the country and here’s the first time they’ve seen whatever poisonous plant and then they may overeat on it and you may see some sickness associated with that. And then, of course, if they ever get hungry, hungry, hungry, they will start eating things
0:15:00.3 even though they under normal conditions wouldn’t, so we try not to…You know they’ll strip the buck off trees, for instance, if you get them hungry enough.

Tammy: So it’s probably a good idea, depending on what part of the country you live in, that you double check because you were talking about Azaleas and I’ve heard that in other parts of the country that rotadendrums are the ones that they…
